J.J. Abrams Says Next ‘Cloverfield’ Entry ‘Overlord’ Is A “Crazy Movie”

At best, “The Cloverfield Paradox” was a half-assed ‘Cloverfield’ movie. Even producer J.J. Abrams admitted that production had begun on the movie before they had sorted out how it was going to tie-in into the franchise, and the result was a mess. Certainly, it had its campy, batshit moments, but the picture was mostly formless, and will largely be remembered for how it was released (as a surprise on Super Bowl Sunday) rather than what it was. But Abrams and co. will soon have a shot at redemption.

That Dr. Seuss is so hot right now. With Illumination Entertainment gearing up for their Benedict Cumberbatch-voiced The Grinch movie, and Warner Bros. planning a new Seuss film series, the beloved children’s author is having a bit of a moment. And you can throw a new project on that list because Deadline reports that Wonder and The Perks of Being a Wallflower director Stephen Chbosky is set to direct a biopic based on the life of Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss.

Box-Office Preview: ‘Black Panther’ Set to Maul ‘Deadpool’ February Opening Record

Disney and Marvel Studios’ Black Panther is set to make history at the Presidents Day box office.
If tracking is correct, the critically acclaimed superhero film will take in $165 million-plus over the long four-day weekend in North America, the top showing ever for both the holiday and the month of February. Black Panther will snatch the record from another superhero film Deadpool, which took in $152.2 million over Presidents Day weekend in 2016.

Jeffrey Tambor Officially Departs ‘Transparent’

Jeffrey Tambor has officially exited “Transparent,” Amazon confirmed Thursday.
Tambor leaves the series ahead of it’s upcoming fifth season. His departure follows multiple misconduct allegations and a period of waffling on whether he would return to the Amazon Studios series.
The actor was accused of sexual harassment by his former personal assistant, a trans woman named Van Barnes, in a private Facebook post on Nov. 8. Later that month, guest star Trace Lysette came forward with further alleged instances of inappropriate behavior.

Written and directed by Yakin (Remember the Titans, Safe), the pic is produced by Maven Pictures’ Trudie Styler (Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Still Alice, American Honey) and Celine Rattray (The Kids Are All Right, Still Alice, American Honey) as well as Scott Lochmus (The Joneses, London Town), and Jason Orans (Goodbye Solo, Night Catches Us).

‘Charles in Charge’ Star Alexander Polinsky Accuses Scott Baio of Sexual Abuse

Polinsky is the second Baio accuser to emerge following “Charles in Charge” star Nicole Eggert, who has also alleged Baio sexually abused her as a minor. Eggert is also represented by Bloom.
Polinsky will break his silence on Wednesday during a press conference to describe the sexual harassment and abuse he claims he endured at the hands of Baio. Eggert will also attend the press conference to give a short statement.
Baio’s lawyer will hold a dueling news conference in his Los Angeles office on the same day at 2 p.m. PT.

‘Sicario 2’ Director Tapped to Helm ‘Call of Duty’ Film (EXCLUSIVE)

Sources tell Variety that “Sicario 2: Soldado” helmer Stefano Sollima is in negotiations to direct an adaptation of the popular video game.

Ryan Murphy Inks Mammoth Overall Deal With Netflix

In another shock to the traditional TV ecosystem, prolific producer Ryan Murphy is moving to Netflix under a record-setting deal valued at $250 million-$300 million.
The five-year pact calls for the showrunner to produce new series and films exclusively for Netflix. The deal starts July 1, when his current deal with 20th Century Fox TV expires. Murphy’s move comes as his longtime studio home of Fox begins a period of transition with its expected sale of the 20th Century Fox studio and FX Networks cable group to Disney.

Matthew McConaughey-Anne Hathaway Drama ‘Serenity’ Gets Awards-Season Release Date

Aviron has given an awards-season release date of Sept. 28 to “Serenity,” starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway.
“Serenity” centers on a fishing boat captain (McConaughey), who is forced to grapple with his mysterious past after a glamorous woman (Hathaway) crashes up against his simple life on a small island in the Caribbean and leaves him questioning his reality. Jason Clarke (“Mudbound”), Djimon Hounsou (“In America”), and Diane Lane (“Unfaithful”) co-star in the film.
